Dragon for Mac alternative
Jude Mercer and Clara Whitfield, Memoe — 15 October 2026
Memoe is an agent you talk to, and it talks back. It lives in your Mac's notch instead of in a chat window, so you can talk to it from whatever app you're in. It runs on the AI you already pay for — your Claude subscription through Claude Code, or your ChatGPT plan — so there's no new model to buy. Underneath, it runs Hermes Agent, the open-source agent harness from Nous Research, and it keeps a memory of you in plain files on your Mac that you can read, edit and delete.
Hold one key from any app, say what you need, and Moe answers out loud and goes and does it: reads the mail and calendar you've connected, takes meeting notes, drives Mac apps itself, and touching the trackpad stops it. "Hey Moe" is there too, once you switch it on in Settings. Before Moe sends anything to another person it shows you exactly what will go out and waits for your click. About 2 to 5 seconds before it speaks.
What happened to Dragon for Mac
Nuance discontinued Dragon Professional Individual for Mac effective 22 October 2018. Anyone who had a perpetual version-6 licence could keep using the copy they owned, but Nuance stopped selling it and stopped updating it that day, and nobody has sold a direct successor since (MacRumors, 24 October 2018, reporting Nuance's own announcement). Eight years on, "what do I use instead" is still a live question for Mac users who relied on it.
Two Mac tools for driving a Mac by voice
Dragon could also navigate menus, click things and drive apps by voice. Apple's own Voice Control and Talon both describe doing that on a Mac today. Here is what each of them says it does, in its own words.
| Apple Voice Control | Talon | |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | "Speak commands to navigate the desktop and apps, interact with what's on the screen, dictate and edit text, and more" — its own words for what you can do once it's on (Apple, Mac User Guide, read 15 October 2026). | "Powerful hands-free input" — its own words. Voice commands, dictation, eye-tracking mouse control ("mouse by just looking"), and noise-based control ("pop to click, hiss to scroll") (talonvoice.com, read 15 October 2026). |
| Typing by voice, in its own words | Its own guide notes that while Voice Control is on, you dictate text through Voice Control itself, and standard macOS Dictation isn't available. | "Commands and dictation" is on its own home page as one of its core features. |
| Needs hands at all | No, once it's turned on and set up — everything shown (numbered overlays, a screen grid, naming an item) is operated by saying a name, a number or a command. | No for its noise- and eye-based controls specifically ("pop to click, hiss to scroll", "mouse by just looking"); its voice commands are the same shape as Voice Control's. |
| Price | Free, built into macOS. | Free to download. A paid "Talon+" tier through Patreon adds more features and support. |
| Platforms | Mac, iPhone, iPad, Apple Vision Pro, CarPlay (its own site). | macOS, Windows, and Linux (X11) — its own site. |
| Who built it, and why | Apple, as part of macOS's accessibility suite since macOS Catalina (9to5mac, 21 October 2019, a contemporaneous tech-press account of the Catalina launch). | Built by programmer Ryan Hileman, who started it after developing severe hand pain that led him to leave his job as a software engineer (IEEE Spectrum, 2021 — that outlet's account, which doesn't call his condition a repetitive strain injury or say it stopped him typing; those words describe a different product's founder in the same article). |
What Memoe is, next to those
Memoe is an assistant you ask for an outcome: hold one key from any app, say what you need, and Moe answers out loud and carries out the steps itself — reads the mail and calendar you've connected, takes meeting notes, drives some Mac apps for a specific task. There are four ways to start a turn, all shipped and documented at docs.memoe.app: hold the key (the default); double-tap it, which starts Moe listening and holds nothing after that, with one more tap to send; press Control-Option-Space once to start and once to stop; and "Hey Moe", which is there too, once you switch it on in Settings. You can also type.
Nobody has tested Memoe with VoiceOver, with Switch Control, or with anyone operating it by voice alone, so this page is not going to call it accessible.
Trying Memoe
Memoe is a free Mac app, and everything that runs on your Mac is free. It needs an Apple silicon Mac on macOS 15 or later. It is signed and notarized by Apple and it updates itself. It is beta, built by one person, so expect a few rough edges.
