Memoe vs VoiceOS
Jude Mercer, SEO and Content, Memoe — 28 October 2026
Memoe is an agent you talk to, and it talks back. It lives in your Mac's notch instead of in a chat window, so you can talk to it from whatever app you're in. It runs on the AI you already pay for — your Claude subscription through Claude Code, or your ChatGPT plan — so there's no new model to buy. Underneath, it runs Hermes Agent, the open-source agent harness from Nous Research, and it keeps a memory of you in plain files on your Mac that you can read, edit and delete.
Hold one key from any app, say what you need, and Moe answers out loud and goes and does it. It connects to around 1,400 services, and it has its own browser, signed in as you. You can message Moe over Telegram, WhatsApp, Slack, Discord, email, Signal and LINE. Before Moe sends anything to another person it shows you exactly what will go out and waits for your click. About 2 to 5 seconds before it speaks.
What VoiceOS is
VoiceOS, made by WakoAI, Inc., describes itself as “an AI assistant that lives in the notch of your Mac and works across the rest of your computer.” Its own blog post says: “Hold your trigger, say what you want, and keep your attention on the work in front of you. VoiceOS understands the request, selects the right connected app, and brings the confirmation or result back to the notch.” Its FAQ states: “On Mac it visually lives in the notch; on Windows it uses the same always-available, system-wide idea at the top of the screen.” Asked how this differs from dictation, the same FAQ answers: “Dictation inserts words where the cursor is. A voice agent interprets an outcome, chooses a connected tool, carries the relevant details into another app, and returns a result. VoiceOS includes both experiences.” Its own example requests are “Send Priya the latest proposal,” “Put lunch with Alex on my calendar,” and “Show me this month's revenue.” Its homepage says “Your audio is never stored on our servers and never used to train models,” and its own privacy page says that turning on its optional “Help Improve VoiceOS” setting means “raw audio and transcripts collected under that setting may be retained indefinitely for training.” It runs on “macOS 10.15 or later, Windows 10 or later,” per its own structured data, with an iPhone and Android app listed as “Coming soon.” Everything in this paragraph and in the right-hand column below comes from voiceos.com, voiceos.com/pricing, voiceos.com/privacy and voiceos.com/blog/ai-assistant-in-your-notch — their own page text, FAQ markup, privacy page and pricing page — read 28 October 2026.
Side by side

| Memoe | VoiceOS | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | An agent you talk to from any app, that answers out loud and does the work. | “An AI assistant that lives in the notch of your Mac and works across the rest of your computer,” by its own description, with the same idea at the top of the screen on Windows. |
| Starting a turn | Hold one key from any app and say what you need. | “Hold your trigger, say what you want,” by its own blog post; its homepage shows the fn key as the one it ships with. |
| What comes back | A spoken answer, and the task carried out — mail and calendar read, a meeting noted, a Mac app driven for you. | “The confirmation or result back to the notch,” after it “selects the right connected app,” by its own description. It also offers a separate dictation mode that “inserts words where the cursor is,” by its own FAQ. |
| Where your speech is processed | “Speech recognition runs on your Mac using local models, and audio is not stored after it is transcribed. On the free tier your voice does not leave your Mac.” | “Your audio is never stored on our servers and never used to train models” by default, by its own homepage; turning on its optional “Help Improve VoiceOS” setting changes that — its privacy page says collected audio and transcripts “may be retained indefinitely for training.” |
| The thinking | Your own Claude or ChatGPT plan, an API key, or a model on your Mac, driving Hermes Agent. Not resold, not marked up. | Not stated on its public pages read for this comparison. |
| What it runs on | An Apple silicon Mac, macOS 15 or later. | “macOS 10.15 or later, Windows 10 or later,” per its own structured data, with an iPhone and Android app listed as “Coming soon.” |
| Price | Free on the Mac. Away, from $20 a month, is a cloud computer of your own that keeps going when the Mac is shut; Away+ is $50 a month. | No free sign-up plan, by its own pricing page. Pro is “$29.99 billed monthly, or $143.88 billed annually (equivalent to $11.99 per month),” after a 7-day free trial that needs a card. After a trial or paid plan ends, it lists “100 dictation sessions and 25 Agent Mode sessions per week” of continued access. Enterprise pricing is custom. |
Trying Memoe
Memoe is a free Mac app, and everything that runs on your Mac is free. It needs an Apple silicon Mac on macOS 15 or later. It is signed and notarized by Apple and it updates itself. It is beta, built by one person, so expect a few rough edges.
