An AI assistant on Mac that remembers what you told it, in a file you can read

Jude Mercer, SEO and Content, Memoe — 15 October 2026

Tell Moe your dog's name once, and it doesn't ask again next week. That's not Moe re-reading every conversation you've ever had with it — it's two short text files on your Mac, read before it answers you, that you can open in any editor and see for yourself.

Two plain files, read before every answer

What Moe remembers is kept in plain files on your disk that you can read, edit and delete. In the app, open Memory in the sidebar, under Library, and then Open folder: one Finder window appears, named What Moe knows, holding every memory file side by side — starting with USER.md and MEMORY.md, the two files Moe reads before every conversation. The folder is a set of links to the real files, so opening one in TextEdit, or any editor you like, and saving it changes what Moe actually knows.

Change a line, or throw it out

You don't need an editor for small changes. On the Memory page itself, click any line and it becomes a text field right there; fix the wording and press Return, or press Esc to leave it as it was. Clear a line and save, and Moe forgets it. Nothing about this is locked inside a model somewhere — it's a line in a file, and you can always see the whole file.

Deliberately short, not something that quietly grows

This isn't a transcript of everything you've ever said. Every word in those two files gets read before Moe answers anything at all, so what's in there has to earn its place — a short list of plain facts: who you are, who matters to you, how you like things done. In practice that list stays small; it is a few lines, not a biography, and it's built to stay that way rather than to keep expanding the longer you use the app.

Bringing in what you already told ChatGPT or Claude

If you've already spent months telling ChatGPT or Claude who you are, you can paste that into Moe rather than starting over by hand — it reads what you paste the same way it reads anything you tell it directly, and keeps the useful parts as its own plain-fact lines.

Where this does, and doesn't, leave your Mac

Free, on your Mac: your memories and conversations stay on your Mac. If you turn on Away: “Our server stores your memories, conversations and AI sign-in in a form it cannot open. On your cloud computer they are readable, because that is where Moe thinks.” See the privacy page for the full wording.
