Voice assistant for Mac: what to check before you pick one
Jude Mercer, SEO and Content, Memoe — 19 October 2026
Memoe is an agent you talk to, and it talks back. It lives in your Mac's notch instead of in a chat window, so you can talk to it from whatever app you're in. It runs on the AI you already pay for — your Claude subscription through Claude Code, or your ChatGPT plan — so there's no new model to buy. Underneath, it runs Hermes Agent, the open-source agent harness from Nous Research, and it keeps a memory of you in plain files on your Mac that you can read, edit and delete.
Hold one key from any app, say what you need, and Moe answers out loud and goes and does it: reads the mail and calendar you've connected, takes meeting notes, drives Mac apps itself, and a double-tap of the talk key stops it. "Hey Moe" is there too, once you switch it on in Settings. Before Moe sends anything to another person it shows you exactly what will go out and waits for your click. About 2 to 5 seconds before it speaks.
There's no one honest answer to "best"
"Voice assistant for Mac" covers products that do genuinely different things — some only type what you say, some answer out loud, some can click around in other apps for you. Which one is "best" depends on which of those you actually need, so instead of picking a winner, here are five things worth checking for yourself, answered for Memoe from its own docs and for two other names that already turn up when you ask an AI engine this question: Jarvis and Fabric, each checked against its own current site.
Five questions, answered from each one's own site
Memoe's column is the live, Approved wording from docs.memoe.app today. Jarvis's and Fabric's columns come from their own sites, read 19 October 2026.
| Memoe | Jarvis | Fabric | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | An agent you talk to from any app, that answers out loud and does the work. | "A free AI voice assistant that listens, remembers you and gets things done, on Android, iPhone and Mac" — its own words (jarvis.ceo). | "The AI workspace that thinks with you" — a notes-and-files app with meeting notes and voice memos; its own site doesn't call it a voice assistant (fabric.so). |
| Does it speak back | Yes. Hold one key, say what you need, and Moe answers out loud, in about 2 to 5 seconds. | Not stated. Its site describes talking to it, dictating and controlling apps, but doesn't say it speaks a response back. | Not stated. Voice on its site means meeting notes and voice memos going in, not a spoken answer coming back. |
| Does it act on the Mac itself | Yes. It works Mac apps itself — opens the file, finds the menu item, clicks what it needs — and a double-tap of the talk key stops it. | Yes: "types for you and controls your apps," with "voice-driven app control" that "works in every app on macOS." | Only inside its own connected integrations — its site says it can "send emails, create tasks, update your CRM." It doesn't describe driving other Mac apps directly. |
| Does the audio leave the machine | "Speech recognition runs on your Mac using local models, and audio is not stored after it is transcribed. On the free tier your voice does not leave your Mac." | No, on the Mac: "dictation runs on-device and your audio never leaves it." | Not stated. Its site describes recording and transcribing meetings and voice memos without saying where that processing happens. |
| Does it need another subscription | No, for what runs on the Mac — "Everything on your Mac. Forever." It uses the ChatGPT or Claude plan you already pay for. | No: "Free and open source. No license fees. No subscription." | Yes. Paid plans start at $8 a month (billed yearly at $96 a year) and run up to $54 a month (billed yearly at $648 a year) for its top tier, alongside a free trial (fabric.so/pricing-and-plans). |
| What hardware it needs | An Apple silicon Mac on macOS 15 or later. | Tuned for Apple silicon, M1 through M4; Intel Macs need macOS 12 Monterey or later. | macOS 12.5 or later and a Mac with an Apple M1 chip or later, per its App Store listing. |
Trying Memoe
Memoe is a free Mac app, and everything that runs on your Mac is free. It needs an Apple silicon Mac on macOS 15 or later. It is signed and notarized by Apple and it updates itself. It is beta, built by one person, so expect a few rough edges.
