Voice control for RSI on a Mac
Jude Mercer and Clara Whitfield, Memoe — 15 October 2026
Memoe is an agent you talk to, and it talks back. It lives in your Mac's notch instead of in a chat window, so you can talk to it from whatever app you're in. It runs on the AI you already pay for — your Claude subscription through Claude Code, or your ChatGPT plan — so there's no new model to buy. Underneath, it runs Hermes Agent, the open-source agent harness from Nous Research, and it keeps a memory of you in plain files on your Mac that you can read, edit and delete.
Hold one key from any app, say what you need, and Moe answers out loud and goes and does it: reads the mail and calendar you've connected, takes meeting notes, drives Mac apps itself for a specific task, and touching the trackpad stops it. Before Moe sends anything to another person it shows you exactly what will go out and waits for your click. About 2 to 5 seconds before it speaks.
Four ways to start a turn
All four are shipped and documented at docs.memoe.app, read 15 October 2026.
- Hold the key. The default: hold it for as long as you're talking, and release it when you're done.
- Double-tap it. Two taps start Moe listening and nothing is held after that; one more tap sends, or Esc cancels.
- Control-Option-Space. One press starts a turn and one press ends it, with nothing held. This is the one way in that needs no Accessibility permission.
- "Hey Moe." It is there too, once you switch it on in Settings.
You can also type.
Nobody has tested Memoe with VoiceOver, with Switch Control, or with anyone operating a Mac by voice alone, so this page is not going to call it accessible or call it hands-free.
Two Mac tools for voice control
Apple Voice Control and Talon both describe operating a Mac by voice. Here is what each of them says it does, in its own words.
| Apple Voice Control | Talon | |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | "Speak commands to navigate the desktop and apps, interact with what's on the screen, dictate and edit text, and more" — its own guide. You can say "Show numbers" or "Show grid" to label anything onscreen, then say its name or number to click it (Apple, Mac User Guide, read 15 October 2026). | "Powerful hands-free input," its own words: voice commands and dictation, an eye-tracking mouse ("mouse by just looking"), and noise-based control ("pop to click, hiss to scroll") for people who can't or would rather not speak every command (talonvoice.com, read 15 October 2026). |
| Needs a hand on anything, once it's set up | No — everything described above is operated by speaking. | No, for the eye- and noise-based controls specifically; its voice commands are the same shape as Voice Control's. |
| Price | Free, built into macOS. | Free to download; a paid "Talon+" tier on Patreon adds more features and support. |
| Platforms | Mac, iPhone, iPad, Apple Vision Pro, CarPlay (its own site). | macOS, Windows, Linux (X11) — its own site. |
| Track record for RSI specifically | Part of macOS's accessibility suite since Catalina (9to5mac, 21 October 2019). | Built by programmer Ryan Hileman, who left his job as a software engineer after developing severe hand pain, then built Talon to keep working (IEEE Spectrum, 2021 — that outlet's reporting, which doesn't use the term RSI for Hileman's case or say it stopped him typing; a different product's founder is the one described as RSI-diagnosed in that article. Talon's own home page doesn't mention RSI either). |
Trying Memoe
Memoe is a free Mac app, and everything that runs on your Mac is free. It needs an Apple silicon Mac on macOS 15 or later. It is signed and notarized by Apple and it updates itself. It is beta, built by one person, so expect a few rough edges.
