Raycast AI vs the ChatGPT desktop app for Mac

Jude Mercer, SEO and Content, Memoe — 15 October 2026

Memoe is an agent you talk to, and it talks back. It lives in your Mac's notch instead of in a chat window, so you can talk to it from whatever app you're in. It runs on the AI you already pay for — your Claude subscription through Claude Code, or your ChatGPT plan — so there's no new model to buy. Underneath, it runs Hermes Agent, the open-source agent harness from Nous Research, and it keeps a memory of you in plain files on your Mac that you can read, edit and delete.

Both of these have quietly turned into the same kind of thing: a chat box that also reads your context and runs agents and automations, not just answers a question. Raycast AI is that layer bolted onto Raycast, a keyboard launcher. The ChatGPT desktop app's own download page now describes itself the same way — “ChatGPT Work and Codex, plus context from your email, screenshots, files, and anything on your screen” — which is a different, more agentic app than the plain chat window most people still picture when they hear “the ChatGPT desktop app.” The table below is both products' own description of what each layer does. What Memoe does is set out after the table — including that it can run on the same ChatGPT or Claude plan.

What each one's own source says

Everything below about Raycast AI comes from raycast.com/ai, raycast.com/pricing, raycast.com/windows and raycast.com/ios, read 15 October 2026. Everything about the ChatGPT desktop app comes from chatgpt.com/download, read the same day; its pricing page returned a verification wall on every attempt today, so no price for ChatGPT appears below — only what the download page itself says.

 Raycast AIChatGPT desktop app
Core job “Raycast AI uses the tools you already rely on to get work done” — an AI layer inside the Raycast launcher, built from AI Chat, custom Agents, scheduled Automations and AI-connected Extensions (raycast.com/ai, read 15 October 2026). “Bring ChatGPT to your desktop with ChatGPT Work and Codex, plus context from your email, screenshots, files, and anything on your screen” — OpenAI's own chat app, with its Codex coding-agent app folded in: “Existing Codex app users can update to ChatGPT and open Codex” (chatgpt.com/download, read 15 October 2026).
AI chat, agents, automations “AI Chat,” custom “Agents” with “their own instructions and models,” and scheduled “Automations … from checking emails to preparing your weekly update” (raycast.com/ai, read 15 October 2026). Named as “ChatGPT Work and Codex” on the download page, with the context list above; the page doesn't spell out what Work or Codex do beyond that one sentence (chatgpt.com/download, read 15 October 2026).
Dictation / voice One Pro-only line item: “Dictation — New: Type with your voice using built-in dictation,” with no further detail published (raycast.com/ai and raycast.com/pricing, read 15 October 2026). Lists “Voice” and “Voice with Video” as separate named features in its own navigation; the download page's own text doesn't describe what either does beyond the feature name (chatgpt.com/download, read 15 October 2026).
Browser extension Not mentioned on raycast.com/ai beyond “AI-connected Extensions” — a store of launcher extensions, not a browser add-on, going by that wording (raycast.com/ai, read 15 October 2026). A “Download Chrome extension” link to the Chrome Web Store, offered alongside the desktop app (chatgpt.com/download, read 15 October 2026).
Mobile companion A companion iOS app (raycast.com/ios, read 15 October 2026). “Chat on the go, have voice conversations, create detailed photos, and use ChatGPT Work for delegated tasks from your phone,” with iOS and Android apps; “ChatGPT Work is available on Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans” (chatgpt.com/download, read 15 October 2026).
A second, simpler build Not offered — one AI layer, one set of plans (raycast.com/pricing, read 15 October 2026). “Download ChatGPT Classic for Mac and Windows” is offered as a separate, older build alongside the current app, with its own direct download link (chatgpt.com/download, read 15 October 2026).
Where it runs “All your data is stored locally on your computer. If you enable Cloud Sync, AI Chats are saved on our servers, encrypted at rest and in transit,” and “for complete privacy — use a local model through our integration with Ollama” (raycast.com/ai, Privacy section, read 15 October 2026). Not stated on the download page read for this comparison — it describes what the app does, not where the processing happens (chatgpt.com/download, read 15 October 2026).
Platforms macOS (“macOS Tahoe and Apple Silicon required”), Windows (“v2.8.0.0, Windows 10+”), and the companion iOS app (raycast.com/ai, raycast.com/windows, raycast.com/ios, read 15 October 2026). The main download button picks your OS automatically rather than naming platforms in text (it offered “Download for Linux” on the machine this page was read from); the separate Classic build and the mobile apps name Mac, Windows, iOS and Android explicitly (chatgpt.com/download, read 15 October 2026).
Price No free AI tier: “we only offer Pro plans that include AI. However, you can choose to turn off AI completely in Settings.” Pro is $10 a user a month billed monthly or $96 a user a year billed annually (raycast.com/pricing, read 15 October 2026). Not read today — chatgpt.com's pricing page returned a verification wall on every attempt. The download page's only plan-gating line is about the mobile app's delegated tasks, quoted in the row above.

Read both pages yourself before choosing; a one-day read of two fast-moving products is a snapshot, not a verdict, and this page isn't trying to settle the choice for you.

What Memoe does

Hold one key from any app, say what you need, and Moe answers out loud and goes and does it: reads the mail and calendar you've connected, takes meeting notes on your Mac with nothing joining the call, works some Mac apps itself for a specific task, and touching the trackpad stops it. "Hey Moe" is there too, once you switch it on in Settings. Before Moe sends anything to another person it shows you exactly what will go out and waits for your click. About 2 to 5 seconds before it speaks.

The thinking can come from the same account you already use here: Memoe runs on the ChatGPT or Claude plan you already pay for, on an API key, or on a model on your Mac — not resold, not marked up. What it remembers about you is kept in plain files on your disk that you can read, edit and delete. Memoe is a free Mac app, and everything that runs on your Mac is free; Away, from $20 a month, is a cloud computer of your own that keeps going when the Mac is shut, and Away+ is $50 a month. It needs an Apple silicon Mac on macOS 15 or later. It is signed and notarized by Apple and it updates itself. It is beta, built by one person, so expect a few rough edges.
